UnNatural History Black + White

[1998–2006]

In 1998 I was on vacation with my husband and visited the Exhibit Museum of Natural History in Ann Arbor, Michigan. One of the displays was of an underwater scene of a pond. What my eyes were seeing was a sagging piece of plastic indicating the top surface of the water, with a plastic frog stuck up through the surface, and a glaring lightbulb illuminating it all. I took the photo thinking that the image would be as kitchy as the scene, but instead, a beautifully lit underwater image appeared on the film. I was not usually surprised by the images I saw after my film developed, as I had photographed for a long time and was used to imaging in the scene in black and white. I was hooked, and began looking for natural history museums wherever I traveled.
